Skill in Action - Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World: Book Club Author Talk

with Michelle Cassandra Johnson

Thursday, November 15, 2018
4:30-5:45pm PT / 7:30-8:45pm ET
Cost: Free

Join us in an in-depth conversation with OTM’s first book club pick Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World, with author Michelle Cassandra Johnson.

The book explores liberation for ourselves and others, while asking us to engage in our own agency, whether that manifests as activism, volunteer work, or changing our relationships with others and ourselves.

Skill in Action clearly defines power and privilege, oppression, liberation and suffering, and invites readers to take steps to make changes in their lives to create a world that allows all of us to be free. The end of each chapter, includes a sample practice so that readers can put the wisdom gained from the book into action in their lives.  These sample practices include: breath-work, asana, meditation and interpersonal relational work.

In an effort to move towards liberation for all, the practices extend beyond the individual to offer resources and tools to shift institutional policies and procedures in a culture that has left all of us negatively impacted by white supremacy.

Heavily influenced by the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient yogic text that calls us to live into our dharma and duty even when many distractions entice us to move off our path.  Skill in Action calls people and communities to take action and to not become complicit by becoming complacent. It asks that we take the powerful practice of yoga and use it to create a world that makes space for all, that values all and that speaks truth to power.

Whether you joined the book club, have read the book independently, or would just like to join the conversation - We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, November 15th!
