Off the Mat Into the World® (OTM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging yoga and activism. Founded in 2007, OTM uses the tools of yoga, meditation, and self-inquiry to inspire leaders to create conscious, sustainable change. We define activism as an act of standing for solidarity, equality, justice, and freedom for all.
WHO WE ARE
We are movement builders and fully embodied activists. From yoga studios to retreat centers, online to in the streets, we use yoga and meditation as tools for personal, community, and global transformation. Grounded in practice and guided by vision, we are changing the world.
We envision a global community in which humanity is fully awakened to our interconnectedness with all life - a world that values health and wellness over profit; compassion and care over dominance; love and peace over fear and violence.
WHAT WE DO
Through leadership intensives, workshops, and online courses, we support yogis in becoming conscious and effective community leaders, covering topics like social justice foundations, connecting with our passion and purpose, and linking embodied practice with effective social change work.
We help yogis utilize the tools of yoga, meditation, and self-inquiry to create conscious, sustainable change in themselves, their communities, and the world through leadership trainings, online courses, service and action projects, and much more.
We support and inspire conscious, sustainable activism, connecting leaders with opportunities for action (like local and global service projects) and offering people at every level of engagement with yoga skills and support to create meaningful change in the world from a place of service, solidarity, and accountability.
At its root, the word yoga means union - of mind, body, and spirit. This practice helps us cultivate self-awareness and also learn to move through discomfort and pain. In the face of injustice, it sustains us in our efforts for personal, cultural, and global transformation.
Ultimately, we work to build and sustain an ever-growing community of yogis and conscious activists. From local action circles to social media–hosted learning groups to networks of yogis at the leading edge of activism, people everywhere are taking their yoga off the mat and into the world.
HOW WE DO IT
Our theory of change is that it takes radical self-inquiry, collaboration, and conscious action to transform ourselves, our communities, and the world.
This is a key component of yoga and meditation. We see the mind-body connection as central to self-awareness, responsibility, and healing. We hold ourselves and each other accountable for tending to our trauma, pain, and biases so that we can engage in the world in an honest, effective, and just way.
This is a foundational practice for sharing power, dismantling unjust systems, and building community from an awakened place. We embrace differences of bodies, backgrounds, beliefs, and identities, knowing that compassionate collaboration gives rise to creative solutions and collective transformation.
This comes from the inside out and is based in mutual relationship. We believe in purpose-driven collective action that is life-giving and balance-restoring, that follows the leadership of those most impacted by injustice and violence, and that uplifts us all.
